Earth Day Beauty Tips

Earth-friendly Beauty Bits

This is the last week before Earth Day and the EcoChics are thrilled!  Okay, this may
be an exaggeration, but hey, Earth Day is a great reminder to try a little harder to take
care of where we live.  In honor of this, we're going to pass on a few thoughts this week
for you to chew on.  In your beauty routine, consider:

  • Switch to a real razor.  Disposable razors are cheap, but they don't shave well, nick your shins and clog landfills: about 2 billion a year are thrown out.
  • Reuse your towels for a few days.  Unless you literally wiped dirt off your body with your towel, you should be safe re-using for a few days, saving water & electricity.
  • Be kind to the critters and opt for "Not tested on animals".  Check for the symbol to verify your product is really cruelty free -

Five Ways to Be GREEN and Beautiful

Many people are paying more attention to what they put in their bodies, choosing organic foods and shopping at their local farmers’ market.  However, it is just as important to consider what’s put on the body.  Sustainable clothing companies, like EcoChics Earthwear, provide beautiful, organic clothing that’s good for you and the planet.  They are among the leaders in fashionable, green casual-wear and proudly give a portion of their annual profits to support American Forests.  The co-founders of EcoChics Earthwear, also encourage people to consider green beauty, because what’s put on your face, hair, and skin is also important.  While it’s almost impossible for an entire product line to be 100% natural, the rise in consumer demand is causing more and more companies to replace chemical ingredients with natural alternatives.  There are now many green beauty options that are better for your body and the environment.

The 2EcoChics suggest the following five ways to be GREEN and beautiful:
1. Ayurveda is an ancient method of health and healing which originated in India and is practiced all over the world.  Authentic Ayurvedic products and treatments require pure ingredients so their skin and body-care lines are considered among the most natural.  The 2EcoChics love Kama Ayurveda Rejuvenating Body Treatment, which is packed with wild cherry, whey, and sesame oil.  It improves skin tone naturally.   Another popular Ayurvendic treatment is the Pratima Turmeric Cream/Mask which uses the antibacterial herb to restore complexions.
2. Organic skincare brands help keep toxic chemicals out of the soil and water, as well as off our skin.  Look for brands that contain individual ingredients labeled, "certified organic" which means their source was grown naturally.  The 2EcoChics like Origins Organics Silkening Body Spritz made from soy lecithin and sunflower oil and Eminence Organic Skin Care for toning with a natural lemon citrus twist.
3. Biodynamic beauty products benefit from the uber-ingredients which come from this “original organic” method of farming.  Biodynamic farming follows the natural rhythms of nature to cultivate fertile soil that is rich in nutrients.  It yields the healthiest of produce and most potent beauty ingredients.  Among the best of biodynamic beauty companies is Jurlique, who offers many green choices. One of the 2EcoChics favorites is Jurlique’s Citrus Hand Cream made from biodynamic chamomile, marshmallow, and calendula.  Dr. Hauschka’s Moisturizing Mask also contains biodynamic shea butter for a fabulous natural glow.
4. Paraben and Sulfate-Free is something else to look out for when shopping for green cosmetics and skincare. Ingredients with methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, and butyl-paraben are frequently put into cosmetics as a preservative.  However, just because it can sit longer on the shelf doesn’t mean you want to put in on your face. Natural, paraben-free alternatives are beta-carotene, geranium, and even spearmint oil (which also smells wonderful).  The 2EcoChics are fans of Aveda products, especially the Outer Peace Cooling Masque.  Sulfates are used mostly as a sudsing agent that helps remove dirt and oils from hair and skin but are also known topical irritants.  Greener choices are Dr. Alkaitis Organic Shampoo, which uses sage, horsetail, and Aztec marigold, and Ren Neroli and Grapfruit Body Wash.
5. Vegan is both a diet and lifestyle whose primary philosophy protects animals and the environment.  If a product has a vegan label, its formulation uses no animal-derived ingredients.  However, being called Vegan doesn’t necessarily mean its ingredients are organic.  A Green Vegan beauty product to try is Osea Skin Care Advanced Protection Cream. It uses natural plant material to stimulate collagen production for an organic and vegan approach to anti-aging skincare. When traveling, the 2EcoChics relay on Essensa Juniper Body Gel that fights jet lag with an energizing mix of cypress, juniper, and organic calendula.
If you have any green beauty products you love – tell the 2EcoChics!  Send us your suggestions and we’ll give our beautiful green fans a special shout-out on Facebook and Twitter.

15 Easy Ways to Eco-Entertain this Spring!

Like everyone, the 2EcoChics love to party!  One of our favorite times of year to throw a get-together is during is the spring, where we can enjoy the outdoors before the summer heat makes us wilt.  Springtime entertaining is also great way to celebrate the season, while reducing your impact on the earth. EcoChics Earthwear has put together a list of easy ways to green your party, and be a fabulous eco-entertainer:
1.   Save a tree and use an evite for inviting your guests rather than mailing a paper card.  Or make a phone-call to invite them and find out if they can come at the same time.
2.   Suggest that your friends carpool to your party to reduce greenhouse gases from car emission.  Make it easy by giving out the names and phones numbers of guests who live near each other.
3.   Prepare your yard and flower beds by using an acetic vinegar preparation to get rid of weeds, instead of a toxic chemical.  EcoChics Earthwear likes to set up a table underneath a shaded tree or near a pretty garden.
4.   Plant rosemary in your yard or buy potted rosemary to act as a natural mosquito repellent.  Pots can be placed around the table for an added natural decoration.
5.   Look in thrift shops or yard sales for fun, unique plates.  If they don’t match, it just makes the table more interesting.
6.   Use reusable cloth bags when food shopping for the party.  Plastic bags can take as long as 1,000 years to break down!
7.   Buy snack foods like grains, nuts, and candies from bulk bins at the organic market.  These items cut-back on plastic packaging and the chemicals used to manufacture it.  Serve locally-grown, organic food for your main course.
8.   Wear sustainable clothes to the party, like EcoChics Earthwear organic cotton T’s and tunics. Look eco-fabulous, while helping the planet.
9.   Don’t use single-use tins for food.  Instead choose inexpensive platters and dishes from consignment shops. Encourage your guests to do the same if they are bringing a favorite dish.
10. Put brightly-colored, labeled laundry baskets out near the dining area to encourage composting and recycling among your guests.
11. Decorate and light your table with soy or beeswax candles, rather than stringing electric lights to save energy.
12.  Don’t use paper napkins and instead, cut up old flannel shirts and make cloth ones.
13. Use compostable, disposable cups for your guests, with their name written on it, to cut back on unnecessary replacements.
14. Pack up leftovers for you and your guests to reduce wasted food.
15. Give parting guests plant seedlings in mini-clay pots to take home and plant.

How and Why to GREEN Your Office

Leading sustainability experts and green-living advocates often quote the fact, “The United States produces enough trash every single day to equal the weight of the Empire State Building.”  Every hour, Americans dispose of over 2 million plastic bottles and every second throw out more than 500 disposable diapers.  However all of this trash isn’t just from individuals and their homes.  Businesses and corporations are equally to blame for this volume of mounting waste, putting tons of paper, aluminum cans, and Styrofoam cups into waste bins. They leave lights on for hours on end, use excessive amounts of energy to run equipment, and toss out Styrofoam, and plastic cups by the garbage-basket. Someone can keep an environmentally-friendly home but then spend more than eight hours a day in an office which is anything but green. The 2EcoChics, and founders of EcoChics Earthwear, encourage everyone to do their part to live an environmentally-friendly lifestyle and this includes businesses.  There are simple things that every office can do to create a green atmosphere, which is something the employees, customers, and planet will appreciate.

One of the first things to do is to reduce the amount of paper that’s being used.  To go paperless, corporations can go online for services.  Instead of giving employees a hard-copy paystub, they can make them available for online viewing and utilize direct deposit for payment.  Other forms such as tax forms, employee manuals, job request forms, and banking statements can be kept in an online database which eliminates much paper-waste.  Standard fax machines generate a lot of paper but a green office can use an electronic fax program or paid electronic fax services like Nextiva and MyFax.

EcoChics Earthwear encourages offices to consider their lighting.  Offices should use environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient lights and be careful to shut out lights.  Switching incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL’s) brings down energy costs and even lasts longer.  It’s also a good idea to open blinds and enjoy nature’s light source as much as possible.  Natural light has been shown to improve the mood of workers and everyone feels better being near a window and seeing sunshine!
Business equipment such as printers, computers, copiers, and fax machines account for the large part of an office’s energy use.  However, most new equipment comes with a “sleep” mode which puts it into a lower-power state when inactive.  This kind of equipment is easily identified because it’s branded with an “Energy Star” logo.  Green companies, like EcoChics Earthwear, suggest that their employees carpool. This reduces the amount of carbon dioxide pollution which comes from every employees driving their own vehicle.  Companies can even encourage their employees to ride their bikes to the office by giving away free bike-locks or running special contests and fun internal promotions.
Once a company goes green, they should promote it with environmentally-friendly messages on products and promotional items that carry their brand-name or logo.  This tells their customers that they care about the environment and are doing their part to conserve energy and preserve the atmosphere.  Some ideas are using jute tote-bags, organic cotton T-shirts, or any item made from biodegradable or recyclable materials. Even if an organization adopts one or two practices to green their office, a little effort by a lot of businesses, will make a real impact on the environment.  Having a green office has the added benefit of teaching a company's employees eco-friendly practices they can apply at home and builds awareness among their customers to do the same.
If your office has gone green, the 2EcoChics want to know about it!  Send your company name and a short message about how your business is thinking of the planet to: ecochics@jessicaclay.com. We'll give your company a special shout-out on our Facebook and Twitter pages to spread the word about your commitment to the environment.

Go Green Baby!

Green-minded people all over the world are celebrating the growing awareness of sustainable clothing and its benefits to both people and the planet.  Eco-friendly clothing is entering the mainstream and appearing on high-fashion runways, endorsed by celebrities, and becoming a staple in many casual-wear closets. The growing demand has led to better designs, softer fabrics, and eco-fabulous clothes.  All of this newfound appreciation has moms asking, “Should I be putting organic clothing on my baby?” To this, the 2EcoChics say “YES.”
The 2EcoChics and creators of EcoChics Earthwear endorse wearing organic clothes as much as possible.  Not only does it look great and wears better but it helps the environment and contributes to the quality of life for our children and future generations. Organic cotton clothing isn’t made with chemicals which can pollute the ecosystem and uses less water.  In fact, many sustainable farming systems rely primarily on natural rainfall.
In addition to preserving fresh air, clean water, and healthy soil, organic clothing is better for your children’s health and wellness. A baby’s skin is 5x’s thinner than the average adult’s skin and more susceptible to irritation. Organic cotton does not contain potentially-harmful chemicals that can cause allergy, eczema, and other skin conditions.  It produces a softer fabric compared to conventional cotton because the fibers are left whole instead of broken by machines or destroyed by chemicals.  Clothing made from organic cotton also allows the skin to breathe better because it’s not treated with non-shrink resins and dyes.  This is why organic yoga wear and workout clothes from EcoChics Earthwear are so popular with active adults. Babies and young children, especially in the summer months, are simply more comfortable is soft, organic cotton clothing.  They feel good and look great in ec-friendly cotton onesies and Tee’s.  Plus, their moms have the peace of mind of knowing only natural fibers, without chemicals, are against their child’s skin.  So when it comes to wearing eco-friendly clothes….Go Green Baby!

The Exciting Evolution of Eco-Fashion

Gone are the days of granola T’s and drab, shapeless clothing that looks more like a sack than anything with style.  Today’s sustainable clothing has risen into the ranks of high-fashion. This is due largely to demand, as more and more people want to do their part to help the planet.  Being environmentally considerate is not just for a niche group of do-gooders but has been embraced by people in all levels of society throughout the world.  For some, this means they’re making an effort at home to recycle and use less water, while others go a few steps further and live a fully-green lifestyle.  Wearing sustainable clothing is a natural extension of being eco-friendly.  It sends the message that its wearer cares about the environment and is making smart, informed choices for themselves and future generations on our planet.

Actress and Eco-Fashion Favorite, Emma Watson
This growing demand of sustainable clothing has been noticed by the fashion world, with top designers putting out fashion-forward green clothing.  Some of the hottest tickets in the frigid Big Apple this winter were to the eco-fashion collections at New York Fashion Week. Even such heavy fashion-players as Vogue Editor Anna Wintour took a front row during the showings of such renowned eco-fashion designers as Bodkin, Study by Tara St. James, Organic by John Patrick and Bono and Ali Hewson’s Edun collection.  Reviewers of the collections declared, “Models were dressed to impress with sophisticated, wearable fall and winter silhouettes in sumptuous and sustainable fabrics.”  Sustainable fashion has truly evolved into haute-couture, which was proven by the amount of press and public attention given to the green shows. Celebrities are also doing their part to build eco-fashion awareness and some are even contributing to sustainable clothing and green-accessories collections.  Emma Watson is becoming an eco-favorite, both modeling for the eco-friendly fashion house, People Tree, and collaborating on their designs.
With all of the notice given to the high-fashion collections, it’s almost easy to forget sustainable clothing is also a favorite choice for casual wear. The pioneering green-clothing company, EcoChics Earthwear, just revealed their latest spring collection of organic cotton T’s, tunics, yoga wear, and jute-accessories to fashionable-acclaim.  Co-founders Jessica Clay and Cathy Tiffany have long been at the forefront of everyday organic-clothing, offering irresistible designs at a reasonable price-point. The evolution of the green fashion industry is expected to continue, with sustainable clothing becoming a staple in a woman’s closet.  Even if someone can’t afford high-fashion, they can purchase everyday pieces from companies like EcoChics Earthwear and plan a special seasonal splurge on a favorite piece from a green designer-collection. With so many great alternatives to green-clothing, everyone can do their part to sustain the earth while being stylish and looking eco-fabulous doing it.

Is Living Green and Wearing Organic Clothes for You?

Anyone who is starting to question if they should be living green or wonder what the hype about organic clothes is should ask themselves:
·         Are you concerned about your health?
·         Do you care about the environment?
·         Are you someone who wants to make a positive difference in the world?
·         Do you or any of your family members have allergies or are chemically sensitive?
·         Would you like your clothes to last longer and look better?
·         Are you worried about the carcinogens in our daily living products?
·         Do you want to do your part to sustain the planet for future generations?
·         Do you have a passion for fashion?
If you’ve answered yes to most of these questions, than living green and wearing organic clothing is for you.  Our ecosystem has been damaged because of our dependence on chemicals and use of powerful pollutants.  Environmental toxins have hurt the health of our global citizens and affected all living things.  The good news is that growing awareness of these important issues has made us more considerate of how our actions affect the planet.  Along with natural composting, sustainable farming, recycling, and organic foods, people are choosing to wear natural, eco-friendly clothing as the natural evolution of their earth-friendly values.
The green fashion industry has evolved from the days of drab, plain clothes into fabulously fashionable collections.  Green clothing is now available in everything from evening-inspired Eco-Couture to EcoChics Earthwear everyday T’s, tunics, and comfortable yoga wear.  Wearing natural clothing without toxins, made from materials that sustain the soil, nurtures your health and enriches the planet.  Celebrities like Natalie Portman and environmentally conscious designers like Stella McCartney are increasingly associating themselves with environmentally-friendly fashion because they believe in the cause and in having style. With the abundance of green-clothing choices, you too can wear organic, sustainable clothes that make you look great and make Mother Nature look even better.

Organic Clothes are Eco-Fabulous but What About Wrinkles?

Organic clothes made from natural fiber are good for you and better for the planet.  However, some eco-friendly clothes wrinkle more than others, which can be an issue.  If you’re someone who prefers to be primped and pressed, EcoChics Earthwear recommends you consider the fabric and thread-count before you go shopping.  Certain fabric weaves are less likely to wrinkle such as knits for cellulose fibers like cotton, hemp, and bamboo.  Silk –natural or not, is a notorious wrinkler but Ahimsa silk has been shown to be more wrinkle-resistant. Ahimsa silk is also called, “Peace Silk” because the silk worms are allowed to live and not destroyed the way they are for conventional silk production.  If you purchase an Ahimsa silk garment, you’ll be smooth and feel satisfied, knowing you’ve done your part to help the silk worms.  Wool fibers also wrinkle less because of their natural elasticity but your wool skirt can still be pretty creased by the end of the day.  A general rule to follow is to look for tightly woven wool fabric, like Worsted wools.  The tighter the weave, the less susceptible woolen fabric is to wrinkling, with loosely-woven wools being the most wrinkled after wear. No matter what the natural fiber, remember that the higher the thread-count, the less likely the material is to crease and wrinkle.

If you have purchased eco-friendly fashion, which you love, but are wrestling with wrinkles, consider alternative ways to launder your clothes. One of the best ways to ensure natural clothing stays soft and smooth is to dry it outside on a line instead of using a traditional tumble-dryer.  The breeze blowing through the fabric will dry the clothes quicker and keep the natural fibers flexible, which is what makes them soft.  Certain organic clothes, like bamboo, actually require line-drying or flat drying. Tumble dryers will cause bamboo clothes to lose their shape all together and shrink - alot.  Organic cotton clothes also benefit from drying flat. However, if you can't wait to wear your favorite EcoChics Earthwear, EcoPeace Tunic and threw it in the dryer, take it out as soon as it's done to wear, hang, or fold. If organic clothes are left in a wrinkled pile, they’ll look like it. If you’ve chosen your natural fabrics carefully and dried them properly but they still have wrinkles, then steam should do the trick.  A steam iron will provide heat and moisture to the garment to relax the fibers and remove the wrinkles.  You can also hang some clothes overnight, like woolens, which will naturally pull out wrinkles.
For more tips on keeping your eco-friendly fashion fabulous and wrinkle-free, email the EcoChics at ecochics@jessicaclay.com .

If You Like Clothes with a Message, Consider Clothes for a Cause

Since the 1980’s, message tees have been a favorite way for people to express themselves. They started as over-sized T-shirts with large-print slogans, designed by Katharine Hamnett, and eventually became the trendy, fitted, tees of today.  The message-T has stayed popular over the decades because it’s been embraced by young people, celebrities, fashion-designers, and taken a place in pop-culture. They’re fun because, by wearing a simple shirt, you can show the world your sense of humor, dating status, and even political views. Message tees can be funny and laid-back or look as wild and crazy as its statement.  Whatever the message and design, the important thing to remember is that people will assume you agree with your shirt so choose carefully.  Another thing to consider is how what your tee says can affect others.  A hilarious message can make someone smile, a slogan can inspire, and an invitation...invite.

EcoSerene, "Peace"
Since message tees have the ability to say something about you and to others, why not wear something fabulous? Dress to inspire, support a worthy cause, or simply share the love. The easiest way to do this is with inspirational message tees.  Wearing messages like, "Happiness," "Peace," "Love," and "Courage" encourages eternal optimism and feeling good never goes out of style. If you want to take feeling great a fashionable step further, buy an eco-friendly tee.  Green clothing is growing in popularity because people realize they can look good while doing something better for the environment.  Today's eco-friendly clothing looks as stylish as its conventional counterpart but isn't made with pesticides, helps sustain the land, and lasts longer in your closet. EcoChics Earthwear has been at the forefront of the organic-clothing industry, combining sustainable clothes with inspirational messages. Their EcoSerene line of tunics is made from 100% organic cotton.  They are beautifully designed, soft-to-touch, and with an easy fit that flatters everyone.  Wearing EcoSerene is a wonderful way to reinforce a mantra and give back to the planet while being stylish and comfortable.

If you a fan of wearing inspirational message tees, send the EcoChics your favorite saying and share the love!  Email: ecochics@jessicaclay.com

Wear 100% Organic Cotton for You and the Planet

Many people believe that all clothes made from cotton, are natural and safe.  However, this isn’t true.  Maybe fifty years ago it was, because then the cotton-growing industry employed sustainable methods that didn’t hurt the environment or deplete natural resources.  They also weren’t using pesticides which can harm wildlife and the people wearing mass-produced cotton.  Cotton grown through today’s conventional methods takes up 3% of the world’s farmland but receives a whopping 25% of the global pesticide allocation! The chemicals in the pesticides sprayed on cotton were actually first manufactured as toxic gas used during the Second World War. They’ve long been associated with many forms of cancer – not exactly what you want to wear on your skin.

Organic cotton is grown through sustainable methods which doesn’t harm its’ growing environment.  In fact, this environmentally-friendly approach will actually help replenish the soil, making it more fertile and adding beneficial bio-diversity to the land.  Sustainable farming also leaves a smaller carbon footprint, which is better for the earth. For cotton to be called organic in the United States it has to meet strict regulations for both how it’s grown and shipped. Cotton fields have to be free of all pesticides for a minimum of three years and cotton carefully shipped to avoid cross-contamination.

Another benefit to organic clothing is its lifespan in your closet.  Conventionally grown cotton doesn’t last as long because their fibers start to break down after approximately 15 regular washes.  This is because the cotton fibers have been sprayed with pesticides, dyed, and softened. On the other hand, clothing made from organic cotton will last roughly 100 washes because its fibers are strong and unaltered.  It is healthier to wear organic cotton and more economical.
Perhaps the best reason to buy organic cotton is the way it makes you feel.  Natural cotton is clean and pure against the skin, while allowing skin to breathe. Wearing organic cotton also makes people feel  empowered to be doing their part to help the environment and dressing with a greater purpose. Thanks to growing awareness of the benefits of organic cotton in the apparel industry, gone are the days of plain t-shirts.  Companies, like EcoChics Earthwear, are manufacturing stylish, 100% organic cotton T-shirts and other items which show you care about the world but are still a fashionable chick!  Eco-friendly clothing gives everyone the opportunity to help the planet and themselves by supporting sustainable farming, wearing pesticide-free material, and look great doing it.
